Ukraine Elects A New President

Nearly 30 million Ukrainians are invited to elect a new Ukrainian president. A victory of the 41-year-old television cabaret artist Volodymyr Selensky is considered probable.

In Ukraine, on Sunday morning, the runoff for presidential office began. The approximately 30 million voters are called to decide between incumbent Petro Poroshenko and the political novice Volodymyr Selenskyj. First forecasts are expected shortly after the polling stations close at 7:00 pm CEST.

In the bloated conflict separatist areas of Donetsk and Luhansk in the east of the former Soviet republic is not elected. Already in the first ballot three weeks ago, the comedian and actor Selenskyj had the most votes. Even in the current polls is the 41-year-old with a very large lead in front. Poroshenko threatens a bitter defeat. Both candidates, who had led a very heated election campaign, represent a pro-Western course towards the EU and NATO.

Poroshenko was elected five years ago with the promise to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine quickly. According to UN data, more than 13,000 people have been killed there. The battles continue.

On Friday, the two candidates had yet delivered a spectacular exchange of blows: they discussed in the Olympic Stadium in Kiev in front of about 20,000 spectators. The future head of state will face the bloody conflict in the east of the country and widespread corruption.
