Five countries are ready to accept the 47 migrants aboard the “Sea-Watch 3” rescue vessel. These are Germany, France, Portugal, Romania and Malta, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said at the Mediterranean summit “Med 7” on Monday evening in Cyprus.
“Italy is now experiencing a new phase of emergency that testifies to Europe’s inability to deal with the migration problem, and I thank the friendly countries that have agreed to take in migrants,” said Conte. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed his country’s willingness to accept some of the migrants, the Italian news agency reported.
On Tuesday evening, the European Court of Human Rights ordered Italy to provide medical assistance, food and drinks to migrants on the blocked rescue vessel as soon as possible. The ship is currently waiting in front of the Sicilian coast because it can not dock in Italy.
The captain of the ship and migrants on board have submitted applications for a so-called interim measure. Following this procedure, the Court can intervene in cases of imminent human rights violations and order states to remedy the situation.
