Surprising Little Known Facts About the Presidency

Many political pundits have noted that the presidential campaign of 2016 has been full of surprises, such as the unexpected rise of Donald Trump in the Republican Party and the strong showing by Bernie Sanders in the Democratic contest. But there are numerous unusual facts that can be cited regarding U.S. Presidents throughout history.

For example, did you know that four men were elected to the presidency despite the fact that the majority of people voted against them? Due to our unique Electoral College system, in which presidents are elected by the states rather than by the people directly, John Quincy Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison and George W. Bush were chosen as the president despite losing the popular vote.

Gerald Ford served as both President and Vice President without ever being elected to either post, having been appointed Vice President by Richard Nixon and then assuming the presidency after Nixon resigned. James Buchanan is the only president who never married, while Ronald Reagan is the only one ever divorced.

Eight presidents have died while in office. Four of them, William Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Warren Harding and Franklin Roosevelt all died of natural causes. The other four, however, were assassinated – Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley and John F. Kennedy.
