The 2003 Ford Explorer sped away when officers tried to stop it early on Thursday for a traffic violation in Edna, 90 miles southwest of Houston, said police.

The sports utility vehicle flipped several times as police gave chase on Highway 59.

Four people died at the scene and two more were pronounced dead in hospital.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Edna police chief Clinton Wooldridge told The Social Magazine,  he believes the victims are citizens of Honduras and Guatemala.

Several people were treated for injuries at the scene and handed over to federal immigration officials.

Chief Wooldridge said the fact that a couple of people tried to flee the scene may indicate they were undocumented immigrants.

ABC13 cites authorities as suspecting the vehicle was involved in human smuggling.

The SUV’s back seat had reportedly been folded down in order to fit more people.
