Extreme Athlete Dies In Base Jumping Accident

Extreme athlete Dean Potter and another man have died in a base jumping accident in Yosemite National Park.Potter, 43, and Graham Hunt died late on Saturday, according to a spokesman for the US park.

They were attempting a wingsuit flight from Taft Point, a 7,500-ft promontory.

A rescue mission started after the men’s spotter lost contact with them.

Crews found both bodies in the Yosemite Valley on Sunday.

No parachutes had been deployed.

Dozens of tributes have been left on Mr Potter’s Facebook page.

“May your soul rest in peace,” said Karen Harris.

“You will be missed. Fly Free Dean,” said Joshua Williams.

Mr Potter, who grew up in New Hampshire in the US, was well known for his bold climbs and base jumps, where parachutists take high-risk jumps from cliffs, bridges or buildings.

He also completed tightrope walks and solo ascents across some of the world’s most famous canyons.

He had recently appeared in a film base jumping with his dog.

Base jumping is illegal in Yosemite.
